Dewey (Jack Black) is between Rock & Roll and a hard place. He’s been kicked out of his own band. He’s broke, jobless, and living with Ned, a musician friend (Mike White) who now substitute teaches. When Dewey intercepts a call from a private school about a job, he pretends to be Ned and accepts. Unprepared for the classroom, he discovers the fifth graders have musical talents, and he devises a plan for the schoolhouse rockers to help him win a Battle of the Bands -- and the $10,000 in prize money -- while avoiding the suspicious Principal Mullins (Joan Cusack).
This year the Library’s FREE Off-the Wall rooftop summer film series includes an eccentric playlist of comedies with song-centric storylines. Music-filled movies feature prep-school rockers, gangsta rappers, collegiate a cappella competitors, a young couple scouring the city for an elusive band, and a golden-throated carnivorous plant.
