Writing About Religion

Religion is a key aspect of the universal human experience — if you don’t practice one yourself, you undoubtedly know and interact with people who do. In any case, you likely have something to say about religion, whether that be sharing your personal experience to help someone else in their journey, writing out your criticisms of a certain practice à la Martin Luther, or presenting your findings after performing research on a topic that interests you. In this class, we will go over some of the various types of creative nonfiction essays — both general and religion-specific formats — and discuss how to utilize them to write about your own experience with religion.

These styles include:

  • Personal essays
  • Polemics
  • Devotionals
  • Research papers
  • Other ways to approach writing about religion

This class is taught by a graduate student in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s MFA Program in Creative Writing.
