(Re)writing as Therapy

One of the most potent powers of writing is its ability to remold the past. Whether it’s journaling about a past conversation that didn’t go as you’d hoped, or reading a version of a historical event that reframes your understanding, words have the ability to rewire our minds. In this class, we’ll use writing to explore past events, discovering how imagination can reframe good or bad times. You’ll even have the opportunity to literally rewrite a past event if you’d like.

Subjects explored will include:

  • What would your story be if you were to write a book or movie about yourself?
  • The restorative potential of revision
  • Narrative as empowerment
  • Regret and rewriting

This class is taught by a graduate student in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s MFA Program in Creative Writing.
