Tom Stoppard in Love (With Shakespeare)

Presented By
Joan FitzPatrick Dean

As the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival settles into its summer production of Shakespeare in Love, let us reappreciate the genius of Tom Stoppard.

The decorated British playwright and screenwriter, now 81, co-wrote the hugely popular take on Shakespeare’s romantic history, which was adapted to the stage after the 1998 film captured seven Academy Awards. Stoppard drew earlier from Shakespeare’s canon in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, a play that brilliantly retells Hamlet through the eyes of two originally minor characters.

Former University of Missouri-Kansas City English professor Joan FitzPatrick Dean studied Stoppard’s career in the book Tom Stoppard: Comedy as Moral Matrix. She discusses the work of this modern-day master and how he has been influenced by the original Bard.
