The New York Times once described Tim Kaine, a U.S. Senator from Virginia and former vice-presidential candidate, as a “self-effacing senator in a sharp-elbows era.”
Kaine, a graduate of Rockhurst High School and Mizzou, has served as an elected official since 1994. He talks to Kansas City writer Candice Millard about his new memoir Walk, Ride, Paddle: A Life Outside, which chronicles his adventures and reflects on the events that shaped his life and the world around him: two presidential impeachment trials, a global pandemic, and the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
In 2019, Kaine turned 60 and marked his 25th year in public office. To acknowledge these milestones, he embarked on a three-part journey across Virginia. Over several years, Kaine hiked 559 miles of the Appalachian Trail, biked 321 miles along the crest of the Virginia Blue Ridge, and canoed the 348-mile length of the James River.
