On Sunday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St., DEBATE-Kansas City (DKC) allows students participating in School Board Sound Off to ask questions of candidates running for seats in the upcoming Kansas City, Missouri Board of Education election in School Board Sound Off.
DKC, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing urban Kansas City students the opportunity to hone their skills in debating, works to increase civic engagement by connecting students to important issues.
With School Board Sound Off, students have created a list of topics they find important. Individual students will give one minute speeches explaining their view of a given topic to set the stage for a debate between candidates.
Two of the candidates will then debate who has the best plan and leadership quality to address the students concerns. Student topics include improving graduation and daily attendance rates, creating a diverse curriculum, and adequately preparing students for college.
Candidates Rose Bell, Derek Richey, Cokethea Hill, Kyleen Carroll, Bob Peterson, Crispin Rea, Linwood Tauheed, and Joseph Jackson have agreed to participate in School Board Sound Off.
