Night Raiders

Series: Big Read

The Library continues a month-long series of film screenings in conjunction with Big Read 2022 with the thought-provoking Night Raiders (2021, NR, 101 min.).

Set in a postwar North America in 2043, the dystopian sci-fi drama is a parable about the experiences of the continent’s Indigenous peoples. A desperate Cree woman joins an underground band of vigilantes to infiltrate a military-occupied institution and rescue her daughter, who has become property of the state.

“Though set in the near future,” the Los Angeles Times said, “this film feels like an urgent warning, illustrating what might happen if a younger generation is cut off from its own history and culture.”

Big Read 2022 revolves around the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, Joy Harjo, and her acclaimed book An American Sunrise. The nearly two-month initiative is a celebration of poetry and reading, as well as Native American literature and culture.
