Inside the Park

Some of baseball’s greatest players – and moments – are remembered in Inside the Park: An Exhibit of Souvenir Baseball Programs currently on display at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. The exhibit has been extended through November 2.

The exhibit was derived from Kansas Citian John Nickel’s collection. Nickel presents an illustrated talk about his collection and selected programs chosen for the exhibit on Friday, October 17, at 6 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

The exhibit and program are co-sponsored by Missouri Bank with special thanks to Dolphin Gallery.

An avid baseball fan, Nickel’s collection began five years ago with a desire to own a program from the 1985 World Series between the Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals. He then decided to search for a program from the Royals’ first year, 1969, and his collection was born.

Among the landmark moments documented in the exhibit of more than 50 baseball programs are: The 1929 World Series at Wrigley Field between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Athletics, the 1970 All-Star game in which catcher Ray Fosse was sent to the hospital following a collision with Pete Rose, and the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds game that marked the end of Stan Musial’s 22-year career.
