The Library continues its six-week examination of immigration in America, exploring the challenges of living in a new country and culture and balancing the traditions and values of homes left behind.
The presentation, Between Two Worlds: Identity and Acculturation, features the screening of an episode of the award-winning documentary The New Americans. It follows an Ogoni tribal family that flees Nigeria because of political violence, waits for years in a refugee camp, and finally settles in a low-income housing project in Chicago in pursuit of the American dream. University of Missouri-Kansas City historian Sandra Enriquez leads a post-screening discussion.
The Becoming American series is a project of City Lore, New York City’s center for urban folk culture, and is made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
