Pop In / Pick Up Contact-Free Holds Service

Pop In Pick Up Contact-Free Holds Service

The Library's Pop In / Pick Up holds service offers a safe, easy, and contact-free way for you to borrow physical books, DVDs, and CDs.

When you receive a notice that your holds are ready, go to your selected pickup site and text or call the number posted on the signs. Once Library staff have checked out your materials, you can pop inside, pick up your holds, and pop out!

Please keep in mind that we may alter the scope and availability of this service as we follow Kansas City’s reopening plans and local, state, and national health guidelines. Our priority, as always, is ensuring the safety of Library staff and the public.

Thank you for your patience during this time – your Library is excited to be able to serve you!

Service Guidelines

Availability is limited to specific times at each Library location. You must sign up in advance to reserve your spot. Patrons are limited to one appointment per day to accommodate as many people as we safely can in our locations.

We require all patrons over the age of two to wear a mask, covering both mouth and nose, while in the library. We also require individuals to adhere to social distancing, remaining at least 6 feet apart. If you need to interact with staff, please stand in front of the plexiglass dividers.

Arrive at the Library no more than 15 minutes before or 15 minutes later than your scheduled start time. If you are more than 15 minutes late, we will be unable to accommodate you and you'll need to make a new reservation.

How it Works:

  1. Browse our catalog and find an item you want to borrow.
  2. Select a pickup location from the list of available sites.
  3. When your materials are available, the Library will email you a notice that your holds are ready at the location you selected.
  4. Come to your selected pickup site during designated operating hours. When you arrive, text or call the number posted on signs near parking areas to let staff know you are outside and ready to get your holds.
  5. Library staff will automatically check out your materials to your account when you notify us you have arrived.
  6. Our staff will place your holds on a pick-up table inside. Your checked-out materials will be bundled with an attached sign with your last name, the last four digits of your Library card number, and the pick-up date.
  7. Patrons can enter the Library to get their holds one at a time. The Pop In / Pick Up station will be in the lobby area.
  8. Pop in, pick up your holds, and pop out!
  9. When you bring back your items to the Library, please deposit them in the outdoor returns boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why are holds pickup hours and days different than usual?

Some of our locations aren’t large enough to allow the social distancing for staff and patrons that’s required under Kansas City’s reopening plans. We are consolidating our employees and services in ways that can accommodate the necessary safety setups; we’re also looking to serve as many neighborhoods in the Library’s service district as possible.

The Library is regularly evaluating patron needs and our resources to add hours and expand schedules at sites as we are able. We hope to further restore services as public health guidelines and recommendations evolve and allow. You can stay updated on the status of Library operations at kclibrary.org/coronavirus.

  • What is the Library doing to ensure that the materials I check out are safe?

We have enhanced procedures that we long have used to assure cleanliness and safety, following best practices by libraries nationwide. Many items have been in isolation since the Library temporarily closed its buildings in March. Newly returned materials – books, DVDs, and CDs – must be deposited in our outside drop boxes, and from there will be taken to confined areas to sit untouched for a minimum of 5 days, a period of time based on industry and health official guidelines. Our staff is also implementing other stringent safety measures, including sanitizing techniques and materials handling recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

  • When can I pick up my holds once I’ve been notified they’re ready?

Holds service pickup schedules vary by location and will change or expand as the Library works with public health officials to gauge the safest practices. We are regularly updating the hours and days Pop In / Pick Up is available at our locations; check our holds service overview page for the latest information.

  • Do I need to bring my Kansas City Public Library card with me?

We automatically check out your materials when you arrive and text or call to pick them up; however, you’ll be asked to verify your library card number upon arriving at the pickup station.

  • Where exactly do I go when I arrive?

    • By car: Pull into the Library parking lot or garage and park in an available space – do not pull up to the curb near the building.
    • By foot, bike, or transit: Please check to see if there is a line of patrons waiting to enter. If so, please join the queue and remain 6 feet apart from others at all times.

When you arrive at Library, text or call the numbers on the posted signs to let staff members know you are ready to pick up your materials. They will then check out your items and place them at the pickup station. You will be greeted at the front door, ensuring that only one patron at a time may enter the building to pick up materials. Your items will be tagged with your last name, the last four digits of your Library card number, and the pickup date.

  • Do I need to wear a mask?

We require all patrons older than age 2 to wear masks, covering both mouth and nose, while in the Library and in the Community Connection Rooms. We also require individuals to adhere to social distancing, remaining at least 6 feet apart. If you need to interact with staff, please stand in front of the plexiglass dividers.

  • Can I bring my kids?

A parent or guardian with a young child or children may bring them in while picking up holds.

  • Should I be prepared to wait in line?

It depends on how many people are picking up holds at the same time. Depending on the number, you may be asked to remain in your vehicle while other holds are filled and a Library staff member will text or call you back when it is OK for you to enter the building. If you join a line outside, please remain 6 feet away from other patrons.

  • Can I request that my holds be brought out to my car?

No, we are not able to offer curbside service at this time. Be aware some of our locations do not permit curbside parking; please park only in designated Library parking spots.

  • Can I browse the shelves or check my email on a Library computer while I’m picking up my holds?

We’re sorry, but we are currently allowing patrons inside for specific services only. See our Coronavirus Updates page for more information. We will regularly reassess plans as public health guidelines and recommendations change.

  • What if I just need to use the online catalog to place a hold on a book, CD, or DVD?

As always, you can browse our collection of books and other materials online at kclibrary.org/catalog.

  • How long will it take to get an item I placed on hold?

You could see some initial delays as our staff works through requests submitted while the Library was closed. Our new cleaning and safety procedures could also affect some wait times, although we've attempted to minimize potential delays by ordering many copies of popular new items, and will continue to do so. We appreciate your patience as we work to ensure that all items are safe before we lend them anew to the public.

  • Once my holds are available, how long do I have to pick them up?

You have 10 calendar days from the time you’re notified. After 10 days, unclaimed holds will be removed from your account and the items will be made available to other patrons.

  • When does my checkout period actually start?

The loan period begins at the time you pick your materials up.

  • What if I no longer need or want the items I have on hold?

You can release them by canceling the hold in your catalog account. We can then make those materials available for others to enjoy.

  • How long do I have to return materials?

The loan period for all new checkouts is 21 days. That’s longer than usual for items such as feature film DVDs; we are temporarily giving patrons more time to enjoy these materials. The Kansas City Public Library does not charge late fines, so there is no urgency to return any materials you may have checked out at this time. If you would like to return your materials, please deposit them in the drop boxes outside any of the Library’s 10 locations. We are, for now, not accepting returns inside our buildings in accordance with our enhanced safety/cleaning procedures.

  • What if I have other questions about my holds?
