The Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Public Library are partnering on the KC Pop-Up Book Group. Meet fellow readers from across the metro and join in an engaging discussion of the latest pick. The KC Pop-Up Book Group is a great fit for book lovers looking to dive into a novel together in a casual, low-pressure setting. No need to attend every meeting, or even finish the book, to be a part of this group — just pop in!
The next selection is Mask of the Deer Woman by Laurie Dove. In the novel, after her daughter is murdered, a former Chicago detective takes a job as the tribal marshal on the fictional Oklahoma reservation where her father grew up. Her first order of business is to investigate the disappearance of a local college student, a young woman. As the narrative progresses, protagonist Carrie Starr senses that something is watching and following her. She realizes it’s the fabled Deer Woman, but she is uncertain if this spirit is there to guide her or to punish her.
Laurie Dove joins the discussion virtually. Before the book group, meet the author at the Plaza Branch during her discussion of the novel with the Library’s Anne Kniggendorf. The Mask of the Deer Woman will be for sale by Monstera’s Books, and Laurie will sign after the event.
This program is intended for individuals 18 years and older.
