Cultural Conversations: Teaching our Children

The Plaza Library partners with Cultural Crossroads to encourage communication in our community. Cultural Conversations is a program designed to offer opportunities for open discussion and exchange of ideas on multicultural topics. Meet and talk with others who are interested in cultural dialogue, exchange ideas, and learn about the many cultures in our society. Each session is held on a Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm April 19: Teaching our children We are all familiar with the adage "it takes a village to raise a child" but what does that mean in practical terms -- and in America's diverse society? Our children learn at home, in school, from popular media, and from peer groups. How does the culture in which a child is raised affect the relative importance of those various sources? How do children from different cultures relate to each other's knowledge base? May 17: Health and Healing The Kansas City community is in the forefront of recognition of the effect of different faith traditions on questions of health and healing. Different cultural traditions also affect how we view life and death, physical/mental/emotional health and well-being, and what options are available and suitable for healing purposes.
