Walking with Sam: A Father, a Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain

Presented By
Andrew McCarthy

Andrew McCarthy may be best known for his membership in Hollywood’s 1980s Brat Pack and roles in classic films including St. Elmo's Fire, Pretty in Pink, Weekend at Bernie’s, and Mannequin. But he’s also an author and has written for National Geographic.

He discusses his latest book, Walking with Sam: A Father, a Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain, the poignant account of a five-week pilgrimage he made along the historic Camino de Santiago with his young adult son Sam.

McCarthy hoped the trip would allow the two to connect in meaningful ways, and indeed that happened amid discussions of divorce, the trauma of school, fame, and McCarthy’s difficult relationship with his own father. They had more substantive interactions in those five weeks, McCarthy said, than in the previous two decades.

Co-presented by Rainy Day Books.
