(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Kansas City Public Library is pleased to announce Jimmy Thomas as the new branch manager for the Irene H. Ruiz Branch, also known as the Irene H. Ruiz Biblioteca de las Americas. The previous branch manager, Amy Morris, retired in 2025 after 18 years of service with the Library.

Jimmy joined the Library as a specialist in the Community Resources department, which serves patrons experiencing life challenges and connects them with resources for meals, housing, medical services, and more. During his time in Community Resources, Jimmy spearheaded impactful programs, such as monthly Coffee and Conversations events and the Pathway to Permanent Housing resource.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to work on a variety of services and programs unique to the Westside neighborhood, like the continuation and growth of the Seed Library and engaging with neighbors who are passionate champions for the community,” said Jimmy. “I’m also excited to grow my Spanish language skills and use 3D printers to provide a new and creative service for patrons.”

Located in Kansas City’s Westside neighborhood, the Ruiz Branch opened in 2001 and is named after former Library employee and Westside advocate Irene H. Ruiz. The branch is known for its wide variety of materials in Spanish, a unique collection related to Latin American culture, and the system’s Seed Library, offering vegetable, fruit, flower, and tree seeds to patrons at no cost.

“Jimmy is poised to continue Irene H. Ruiz’s legacy of public service and advocacy. He is uniquely ready, with his experience and kind tenacity, to provide Library programming and services that will continue to welcome and celebrate the Westside,” said Kim Gile, branch services and engagement director.

Jimmy looks forward to visiting with you soon!
