The Waldo Branch Closes in December and Reopens in January with a Fresh Look

The Waldo Branch started as the Southwest Branch inside the former Southwest High School at 65th and Wornall Road. In December 1988, the current facility at 201 E. 75th Street opened as the South Branch, equipped with the latest 1980s technology: IBM PC and Apple IIE computers, electric typewriters, and printers.

Over the last 36 years, there have been improvements and upgrades — but the location is due for a major overhaul. To accomplish this, the Waldo Branch will be closed for in-person services from December 9, 2024, through January 2, 2025.

During the closure, patrons can still pick up holds. But they're encouraged to visit one of the Library's other locations to use meeting rooms, attend storytimes, get documents notarized, or work on computers.

Materials may be returned to any Library location, including Waldo.

The Library Collections staff has been gearing up for the project for the last few months. This includes designing a new floor plan, mapping logistics for shifting books and other materials, and labeling shelves.

The Waldo Branch will receive new paint, carpet, furniture, technology, meeting room upgrades, and a rearranged collection layout on a $150,000 budget.

The Library expects to complete a comprehensive facilities plan over the next year to determine the need for building maintenance and new facilities across the system.
