San Francisco Public Library Settles Super Bowl Bet With Kansas City Public Library
"A bet’s a bet!” the San Francisco Public Library tweeted on Tuesday.
A few weeks after the Kansas City Chiefs gave the San Francisco 49ers a resounding thumping in the Super Bowl, San Francisco Library staffers have settled their friendly wager with the Kansas City Public Library. The SFPL posted a story on YouTube read by City Librarian Michael Lambert, who was also decked out in a Kansas City Football hat and a Library T-shirt.
The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 11, against the 49ers in a 25 to 22 victory. It marked Kansas City's third Super Bowl win in the last five seasons.
Before the game, KCPL and SFPL announced teaming up to Tackle Censorship with a bet. And SFPL paid the price: a banned book storytime, Sofia Valdez, Future Prez, by Andrea Beatty. The children’s picture book, which focuses on how to make your community and the world a better place, has been banned for featuring an image of LGBTQ pride.
Though a contentious game for many fans, the two library systems remain on the same team when it comes to intellectual freedom.
The Tackle Censorship campaign launched in 2023 with a similar wager between the Library and the Free Library of Philadelphia. The outcome … was the same.
And how could the result have been any different with fans like these?
These photos were taken on February 14, just before the start of the Super Bowl parade in downtown Kansas City, several hours before the tragic shooting at Union Station.
The Kansas City Public Library was grateful to have the support of the San Francisco Public Library during this time, and we know that we are all strongest when we stand together.
