Super Bowl and Super Books: A Winning Combination
Are you ready for some book-themed Super Bowl fun?
Or perhaps it is some Super Bowl-themed book fun.
Either way, the Kansas City Public Library has you covered with pun-filled social media posts, Coach Read’s Shelf Help, and enormous, Chiefs-themed video screens visible from outside our Plaza location.
BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
Our readers’ advisory team is always available to help you find your next great read, but this is the only time of year you can receive those recommendations from everyone’s favorite fictional librarian – Coach Read, our homage to a certain local football coach.
“One of the core missions of public libraries is helping people navigate a sea of literary possibilities to choose their next favorite book,” says Kaite Stover, the Library’s Director of Readers’ Services. “Last year, Coach Read introduced the service to a host of new Library users, and we hope to have that same type of success this year.”

SOCIAL MEDIA
Follow us on social media to stay up to date on everything happening at the Library and enjoy an occasional dose of pun-filled Super Bowl fun.
“This is something that started when the Royals went to the World Series back in 2014,” says Social Media Manager Lindsey Foat. “There was so much community pride surrounding that trip to the World Series, and the Library wanted to be a part of it. Over the course of two World Series and now two Super Bowls, the Library’s sports-themed social media posts have received thousands of likes and shares.”

PROJECTION MAPPING
A year ago, the Library celebrated the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years with animated projections inside our Central Library.
“Back in the summer of 2019, the Library was hosting a retrospective of Ralph Steadman’s artwork,” says Leslie Case, a member of the Library’s audio/visual team. “I wanted to create something special, so I made some animated graphics based on his art and then we projected those animations on the floor and the pillars in Kirk Hall at the Central Library. We did something similar for the Chiefs last year (going into Super Bowl LIV).
“This year, because our physical locations are closed, the traditional continues using large screens that are visible from outside of our Plaza location (4801 Main St.).”
