Library Shows its Super Bowl Spirit... with Bookish Twists

No shushing at the Kansas City Public Library. Not during Super Bowl week.
The Library is adding its own imaginative twist to the run-up to Sunday and the Chiefs’ showdown with the San Francisco 49ers in Miami – check out all the ways we're celebrating the team's first visit to the big game in 50 years.
Read Friday
On Friday, January 31, 2020 — the final Red Friday before the Super Bowl — the Library will be celebrating Read Friday, inviting Kansas Citians to submit photos of themselves in Chiefs attire, holding a book, via Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
You can add custom KC Library stickers/banners to your Instagram Stories, or upload animated GIF files via social media to show off your Read Friday pride. See instructions at the end of this post on using Instagram Stickers.)

Projecting Victory
The weekend prior to the Super Bowl, the downtown Central Library exterior will be bathed in red, joining the citywide color scheme. And inside the building, Kirk Hall, the Central Library’s first-floor grand foyer, is strikingly emblazoned in animated, Chiefs-themed projection lighting. Stop in to watch the looping shows any time during operating hours.

'Coach Read' Hits the Town
Chiefs coach Andy Reid's alter ego, Coach Read, is making appearances in the form of large, colorful cutouts at the Central Library, Plaza Branch, and Southeast Branch. You might also catch him popping up at various places around downtown on Friday.
You can also find Coach Read on social media in the set of Library Instagram stickers.
And Coach has also taken over the Library's Shelf Help personalized reading recommendation service during the run-up to the Big Game. If you're looking for suggestions on books you may want to tackle next, our coach has the playbook to guide you to bookish victory.

Super Books LIV Pits Library Against Library
The Library’s game plan extends to social media, where it drew national attention in 2015 with a friendly trash-talking exchange with the public libraries of Toronto and New York City during the baseball Royals’ American League and World Series championship run. Library-themed celebratory posts and tweets in the wake of the Chiefs’ AFC championship win over the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago brought engagement from more than 10,000 people on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Now, the Library is … um, throwing the book at San Francisco and its Super Bowl underdog football team in a literary-themed, Chiefs-vs.-49ers series of exchanges on Twitter. Using the hashtag #SuperBowlLIV, it plays off well-known book titles.
The libraries’ rivalry extends to a friendly wager. A Chiefs victory on Sunday would require SFPL to feature a display of books by Missouri authors. A 49ers win would require the Kansas City Public Library to feature works by California writers.

A Colorful Chiefs Celebration
The Library created a set of Library/Chiefs illustrations as coloring pages for kids (or adults with a proclivity for colored pencils) to enjoy as a Super Bowl activity. Fair warning: you may need a lot of red and gold crayons.

Echoes from Super Bowls Past
The Library's Missouri Valley Special Collections dug out a promotional booklet published by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The booklet contains photographs of civic and business leaders and statements from them congratulating the Chiefs on the team's achievement. The piece has brief articles summarizing development projects going on in the city at that time and several advertisements for Kansas City area businesses.
