A Stellar Summer of Reading

Readers have been boldly going where many love to go – to the Library – to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Program: Dare to Discover. We’re just a few weeks away from the July 31 wrap-up, but patrons have already rocketed past 6,000 registrations! If you or your family haven’t yet signed up, there’s still time. Visit kclibrary.org/summerreading, get registered, log your five books, and claim your prize. We've also organized some other Summer Reading highlights and resources to showcase this year's celestial reading celebration.

Writer Claire L. Evans, a contributor to Vice, The Guardian, and Wired and former editor of the multiplatform Motherboard, shared stories about the unsung female visionaries who’ve helped write the story of the internet and related technology in a discussion of her book Broad Band: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the Internet. Evans spoke at the Central Library on July 8, 2019; you can listen to audio from her presentation.

North-East Branch staff showed off some astronaut art skills at the annual Chalk Walk Festival in the Historic Northeast neighborhood this past spring.
Youth at the Southeast Branch had a blast getting crafty by creating bottle-sized, glittering galaxies.

Children's entertainer Jim "Mr. Stinky Feet" Cosgrove performed a moon-rockin' concert in Central Youth Services in June. Cosgrove's next appearance will be at the Plaza Branch's Friday Night Family Fun on July 26.

Read 5 books, earn your prize!
Reading is always a reward unto itself, but who doesn't like bonus encouragement? Participants of this year's Summer Reading program are clearly thirsty for some good books, as the prize cups for each age level are taking off! Kids ages 0-5 can earn a sippy cup, youth and teens ages 6-18 get a light-up plastic cup, and adults 18 and older can claim a pint glass.
