Before Jumanji and Polar Express were blockbuster films starring major celebrities, their stories lived on the printed page and in the minds of readers. Illustrator Chris Van Allsburg won the coveted Caldecott Medal for each as the best children’s picture book of its respective year, and his illustrations and 35 works by 30 other artists are included in the Young at Art exhibition.
Also featured are drawings by Dorothy Lathrop, the inaugural Caldecott winner in 1938, as well as illustrations from Tasha Tudor’s 1944 Mother Goose and a from Maurice Sendak drawing.
The exhibition is in the permanent collection of the Wichita Falls Museum of Art at Midwestern State University in northern Texas. Since 2018, it has been on a national tour through ExhibitsUSA at Kansas City’s Mid-America Arts Alliance.
Presented in partnership with The Rabbit hOle.
