Mixed media works by Justin Canja

Collage Co-Lab

Join the artist in Mountain Gallery to work on a collaborative project or create your own collage. Materials will be provided. Free and open to all ages.

Artist Justin Canja explores difficult topics, such as identity, sexuality, race, religion, conflict – and uncomfortable truths – not with a heavy hand, but with a playful touch.

The new exhibition Yes, And … features dozens of Canja’s mixed media works. The title references the potential for the artist, as well as patrons, to improvise. The public is invited to collaborate with Canja on artwork, which will be created and displayed during the run of the show.

A studio artist at InterUrban ArtHouse in Overland Park, Kansas, Canja grew up in the Washington, D.C./Maryland area. The self-taught artist incorporates discarded items and found objects in his expressionist works.

“If people can see something and relate to something in my work, I’ve done my job in being an activist,” he said in a video produced as part of the Centerpiece Visual Art Award funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Narrative is everything. The way that you tell a story is going to be different from anyone else; it’s like a thumbprint, a fingerprint,” Canja added. “The more personal I can get with my work, the better.”
