This new exhibition, featuring the ambitious sculptural works of three teaching artists, employs a range of materials and fabrication processes in exploring philosophies relating to construction, technology, and place. “The three of us teach at institutions that are investing in technology such as 3-D printing, CNC (computer numerical controlled) milling, laser scanning, and so on,” says Alfred University’s Shawn Murrey. “It’s clear that we are interested in its potential, but the term ‘technology’ feels overwhelming, undefined and forever changing. We approach these tools in different ways, ranging from analog to automated, precision to chance.” Murrey is an adjunct professor and technical specialist in the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred. Co-collaborator Thomas Schmidt is an assistant professor of interdisciplinary 3D studio and digital fabrication at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Brian Caponi is an assistant professor and chair of ceramics at Oakland Community College in Royal Oak, Michigan. The exhibit’s opening – in the Central Library’s Rocky and Gabriella Mountain Gallery – coincides with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts’ 50th annual conference, held this year in Kansas City.
