Andy Ryan came to painting later in life, moving from the verity of photography to the experimental abstractness of watercolor artwork on paper – featured in this debut solo exhibition.
Images in the collection contain both absurdist humor and references to mysticism and spirituality. Amusing faces, ghostly figures, and botanical forms emerge from overlapping shapes and gradient color fields. The distinctive works can be viewed as equal parts surreal landscape and meditative mindscape.
They also reflect what the Kansas City artist calls “a stubborn affinity for the regional southwestern art and imagery that surrounded me during my childhood years in Arizona.” Originally from Phoenix, Ryan came to KC by way of New York City.
