On Writing, on Race

Presented By
Anthony Grooms, DaMaris Hill, Whitney Terrell

Two distinctive writers and educators join local novelist Whitney Terrell in a discussion of their craft and our nation’s fraught dialogue on race.

Kennesaw State University's Anthony Grooms writes both poetry and fiction. His new novel The Vain Conversation, released in March 2018, draws from the real-life lynching of two couples near Bethany, Georgia, and explores the long-term reverberations of racism in America. The University of Kentucky's DaMaris Hill just released A Bound Woman Is a Dangerous Thing, a searing, narrative-in-verse examination of American women of color who resisted violent racism and misogyny.

Terrell, who organizes the Writers at Work series, is an associate professor of English at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the author of three novels, and co-host of the Literary Hub podcast Fiction/Non/Fiction. The series is co-sponsored by the Writers at Work Round Table and UMKC English Department.
