The Last Stand of Fox Company is the true story of a Marine company’s heroic last stand during America’s “Forgotten War.”
In November 1950, after General MacArthur ignored Mao’s warnings and pushed the United Nations forces deep into North Korea, his 10,000 First Division Marines found themselves surrounded and hopelessly outnumbered by 100,000 Chinese soldiers near the Chosin reservoir. Their only chance for survival was to fight their way south through the Toktong Pass, a narrow gorge in the Nangnim Mountains.
The mission was handed to the 234 Marines of Fox Company. The men climbed 7 miles of frozen terrain to a rocky promontory overlooking the pass only to find themselves surrounded by 10,000 Chinese soldiers. The men endured four days and five nights of nearly continuous Chinese attempts to take the hill – dubbed Fox Hill – during which the men held the high ground and allowed the First Marine Division to battle south.
Clavin’s appearance is co-sponsored by Rainy Day Books. Copies of The Last Stand of Fox Company will be available for sale, and the author will sign copies purchased during the event.
