Alarmed that he’d fallen out of contact, Eilene Zimmerman drove to her former husband’s home four years ago and found him dead on the floor outside his bedroom. Adding to the shock were the circumstances: A man who seemingly had it all, from a senior law partnership to the beautiful house, expensive cars, and other comforts that came with it, succumbed to a serious drug addiction.
Zimmerman’s search for answers—she’s a former New York Times business columnist—revealed a troubling reality: a pervasiveness of drug addiction in such high-pressure, white-collar professions as law, finance, and technology. Those in startups also are susceptible. Zimmerman details her family’s tragedy and the discoveries it yielded in a discussion of her memoir Smacked.
