The 2026 Searching the Psyche Through Cinema film series explores the world of horror, inviting us to confront our deepest fears. The series continues with a screening and discussion of director Jordan Peele’s 2017 horror mystery Get Out (R, 104 minutes).
In the film, a young Black man (Daniel Kaluuya) meets his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) parents for the first time – and the visit takes a sinister turn. Get Out received four Academy Award nominations, and Peele won Best Original Screenplay for a work that’s been described as a mashup of The Stepford Wives and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.
IndieWire says, “Peele seduces, subverts and manipulates audience expectations - as the masters Alfred Hitchcock, John Carpenter, and Stanley Kubrick did before him.”
Following the screening, join University of Kansas associate professor of rhetoric and GKCPI guest scholar Robert McDonald and writer and practicing artist Victoria Proctor for a discussion that unpacks the film’s psychological depths.
