In his new book, Lighting Out for the Territory: How Samuel Clemens Headed West and Became Mark Twain, Morris describes how Clemens’ odyssey coincided with a journey of self-discovery.

The man who would become one of America’s favorite authors dodged Indians and gunfighters, received marriage advice from Brigham Young, and narrowly avoided fighting a duel.
