A Mosaic of Mothers

A Mosaic of Mothers

Presented By
SALT

SALT (share, affirm, lift, and tell) is a team of five artist educators creating musical works about the complicated legacies we carry through our families, identities, geography, and aspirations.

In honor of Women’s History Month, SALT presents A Mosaic of Mothers, micro-operas that amplify Midwestern women’s experiences from the late 19th century to the present, suggesting lessons for current generations.

The program explores some of the challenges of prairie survival, the contrast between physical strength and lack of physical freedom, and the joys of simpler times, as told through journals, letters, and family histories.

The original SALT quintet includes mezzo-soprano Sharon Campbell, sopranos Anne Jennifer Nash, Sana Gunther, and Sylvia Stoner, and pianist Young Kim. The performance at the Library also features sopranos Jennifer Townsley and mezzo-soprano Madeleine Friesen, in addition to a student quartet from the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.

A Mosaic of Mothers premiered in 2024 with two micro-operas at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and at Skidmore College and a workshop at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
