'The Matrix'

Presented By
John Whipple, Lonita Cook, Evan Maddox

The 2024 Searching the Psyche Through Cinema film series, which looks to the arts (and this year, to science fiction) to illuminate our understanding of ourselves, continues with a screening and discussion of the 1999 classic The Matrix (R, 136 min.).

What can Keanu Reeves – as computer hacker Neo – show us about the human condition? When a beautiful stranger, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, leads him to a dark underworld, Neo discovers that the life he thinks he knows is really the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence. Will Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) alleviate or compound the confusion?

A post-screening discussion is led by psychoanalyst John Whipple, film critic Lonita Cook, and artist and community organizer Evan Maddox.

This event is co-sponsored by: Greater Kansas City and Topeka Psychoanalytic Center
