Mark Lee Gardner discusses his new book about one of the most thrilling manhunts in Wild West history, lawman Pat Garrett’s pursuit of outlaw Billy the Kid on Tuesday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.
To Hell on a Fast Horse: Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett and the Epic Chase to Justice in the Old West is the first dual biography of the Kid and Garrett. Gardner draws on a wealth of primary sources and published scholarship to present a fresh look at the two men, their relationship, and their storied ride to immortality.
Gardner begins in Las Vegas in December 1880 with the capture of Billy the Kid, details his daring daylight courthouse escape and details the pursuit through July 14, 1881, when Garrett finally gunned down the Kid.
He concludes that while both Kid and Garrett are today considered to be larger than life figures, neither would have reached legendary status without the other.
Copies of To Hell on a Fast Horse will be available for sale, and Gardner will sign copies purchased during the event.
