Award-winning investigative journalist Jeff Benedict discusses his new book Little Pink House: A True Story of Defiance and Courage on Tuesday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the Truman Forum at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Little Pink House tells the story of Suzette Kelo, whose quest to save her house landed her in the center of a national debate on eminent domain.

For the first time, Kelo speaks about the details of her inspirational true story as one woman leading the charge to take on corporate America. She tells Benedict she was just trying to rebuild her life when she purchased a broken-down Victorian house on the waterfront in New London, Conn. The house wasn’t fancy, but with a lot of hard work, she was able to turn it into a home that was important to her, a home that represented her newfound independence.

Little did she know that the city of New London, desperate to revive its failing economy, wanted to raze her house and others like it that sat along the waterfront in order to win a lucrative Pfizer pharmaceutical contract that would bring new business to the city. Kelo and fourteen of her neighbors refused to sell, so the city decided to exercise its power of eminent domain to condemn their homes, launching one of the most extraordinary legal cases of our time, a case that ultimately reached the United States Supreme Court.
