Louise Nevelson is considered one of the most important American sculptors of the 20th century, known for her pioneering assemblages and monumental public art. And yet, she was – and remains – overshadowed by any number of male counterparts.
In a discussion of her new book, Booklist editor Donna Seaman spotlights Nevelson and six other brilliant but under-celebrated female artists of the 1900s: painters Gertrude Abercrombie, Joan Brown, Loïs Mailou Jones, and Christina Ramberg and sculptors Ree Morton and Lenore Tawney. Seaman explores what drove them, how they worked, and how they were perceived by others in a world where women were more accepted as subjects of art than they were as makers.
The event celebrates Women’s History Month.
