On Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St., acclaimed author Jeff Guinn debunks some of the glamorous myths of America’s first celebrity couple of crime with his book Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde.
The iconic motion picture Bonnie and Clyde (1967), featuring Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Gene Hackman, will be screened in the Truman Forum at 5 p.m., prior to Guinn’s talk.
With access to never-before-published material, Guinn, the books editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and bestselling author of eight books, shares the real story of Bonnie and Clyde.
In a time when America was reeling from the Great Depression, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, in the mind of some, were cool, calculating bandits who smoked cigars, robbed banks, and killed lawmen. The true story, however, reveals a different side.
Though their love and devotion for one another was genuine, the couple’s two-year crime spree has been described “as much a reign of error as it was of terror” with the two mostly robbing mom-and-pop stores, breaking into gum machines for meal money, bathing in creeks, and dining on cold beans and Vienna sausages.
The presentation is co-sponsored by Rainy Day Books. Copies of Guinn’s book will be on sale and the author will sign copies purchased during the event.
