This annual series returns in January and February with psychological studies of films directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, whose visionary work swings seamlessly between dark drama and wry, sometimes screwball comedy. A discussion follows each screening.

Frances McDormand won a best actress Oscar for her work in this dark comedy/crime thriller. She’s a pregnant Minnesota police chief investigating three local homicides that ensue after a struggling car salesman (William H. Macy) hires two criminals to kidnap his wife, hoping to extract a hefty ransom from his wealthy father-in-law. Post-screening discussion led by psychoanalyst Teresa Rose and University of Missouri-Kansas City instructor Erin Hamer-Beck.

Presented in partnership with the Greater Kansas City and Topeka Psychoanalytic Center. Co-sponsored by the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
