Former Missouri Secretary of State and U.S. Army captain Jason Kander and his wife Diana Kander sit down with Library Director and CEO John Herron to discuss Jason’s new memoir Invisible Storm, detailing his struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder since the Afghanistan War and its impact on his ascendant political career.

Jason Kander gained national recognition in 2017 when President Barack Obama mentioned him as someone who gave him hope for the future of the United States. But shortly after entering the Kansas City mayoral race in 2018, Jason, who had faced psychological and emotional health challenges since serving in Afghanistan, said he was not mentally fit to hold the office and withdrew.

Diana Kander adds her first-person perspective, deepening the story of her husband’s difficult journey.

Jason’s first memoir, Outside the Wire, was a bestseller upon its release in 2018. His accounts serve as outstretched hands to others struggling with mental health. They also work to further destigmatize psychological and emotional struggles in the veteran community.
