Barton Fink (1991)

This annual series returns in January and February with psychological studies of films directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, whose visionary work swings seamlessly between dark drama and wry, sometimes screwball comedy. A discussion follows each screening.

Intellectual playwright-turned-screenwriter Barton Fink (John Turturro) finds himself with writer’s block when asked to provide a B-movie script. Seemingly good-natured neighbor John Goodman tries to help, but distractions mount amid a series of bizarre events. Post-screening discussion led by psychoanalyst David Donovan and Caitlin Horsmon, as associate professor of film and media arts at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. This title is Rated R and is recommended for adult audiences only.

Presented in partnership with the Greater Kansas City and Topeka Psychoanalytic Center. Co-sponsored by the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
