Andrea Burgay’s Fictions series – on display at the Library’s Guldner Gallery through Aug. 17 – explores realms of remembrance, nostalgia, projection, and evolution. The Library’s Exhibits Coordinator Craig Auge talks with Burgay about works in the exhibition, the artist’s process and motivations, and her generative collage magazine Cut Me Up.
The 1 p.m. conversation is followed by a free reception at 2 p.m.
At 2:30 p.m., Burgay and Auge offer insights and guidance during a drop-in, freeform collage workshop. All ages and skill levels are welcome, and materials are provided.
The Brooklyn-based artist creates sculptural collages out of deconstructed paperbacks found at thrift stores or used book sales. In her studio, Burgay layers the books with collage elements, then repeatedly takes them apart and reassembles them into new forms. The result: a transformation that evokes both deterioration and regrowth.
