Aaron Sorkin based his first Broadway play on actual events at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay in the mid-’80s. A Few Good Men revolves around the trial of two Marines for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine at the base. Their lawyers ultimately uncover a high-level conspiracy designed to eliminate weaker soldiers in the name of patriotism.
It offers a complex look at duty to the corps, duty to carry out orders, and how that can conflict with duty to personal principles. Sorkin’s work was adapted to the big screen in 1992 with Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise in memorable starring roles.
