Writing About Your Life: Flash Nonfiction

Everyone has a story. Sometimes it’s a chance encounter worthy of a mystery novel; sometimes it’s a simple moment of beauty that stops you in your tracks. But putting it into words can be difficult. In this course, we’ll learn how to turn everyday life into a compelling narrative, using techniques from creative nonfiction.

Participants will:

  • Review examples of stellar short nonfiction.
  • Isolate a specific event in their past.
  • Craft a short piece (250-500 words) to memorialize that moment.

This class is taught by a graduate student in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s MFA Program in Creative Writing.
