Don't Drop Me
This sculpture titled Don’t Drop Me by Dominic Benhura depicts a group of three children engaged in lively interaction. In designing this playful paragon of joy, Benhura combined steel, wire, and stone to compose a work of art that practically sings out loud.
Benhura simultaneously captured balance and movement both physically and emotionally through this work. Two children face each other and stand on one leg with the other leg outstretched behind. They both reach up to balance a third playmate between them.
Don’t Drop Me communicates powerfully simple ideas such as joy and acceptance in a way that deeply resonates with viewers. Benhura has an innate ability to portray human feeling through form rather than facial expression. The viewer will notice an overarching ambiguity in the work. Through a lack of detail regarding clothing, gender, age, and facial expressions, the viewer is able to place themselves within the confines of the work to emotionally experience a curious interplay with the sculpture.
