Written Style Guide

When in doubt: follow AP Style

(PA pays for account at http://www.apstylebook.com/online/ - username & password on password spreadsheet)

Titles

Titles of books, movies, etc. are italicized (and properly capitalized, even if they are not as such in our catalog); short stories are in quotation marks.
I just read the story “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” from the book The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway.

Phone

Format phone numbers with dots instead of dashes

816.701.3400 (not 816-701-3400 or 816 701 3400)

Capitalize

Capitalize Library when talking about KCPL

Here at the Library, we like to confuse our staff with bizarre punctuation!
When Sally was a child, she would spend all afternoon in her neighborhood library in Poughkeepsie.
Also, if your sentence is discussing the Kansas City Public Library, do not capitalize the ‘the.’

Capitalize a person’s job title only if it precedes the name:

Director of Readers’ Services Kaite Stover
Kaite Stover is the director of readers’ services at the Kansas City Public Library.

Commas

Use the serial (Oxford) comma
In other words, add a comma before the word “and” in a list

There were oranges, apples, and grapes in the fruit basket.
Henry, Steve, and Andy had to attend yet another Library meeting.

If your list of items already includes commas, use semicolons:

I just watched the following films: Sex, Lies, and Videotape; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.
