Questions About Property Taxes? Library, Legal Aid of Western Missouri Offer Guidance

Monday, December 9, 2019

The December 31 deadline for paying property taxes is nearing and, in the wake of reassessment, many Jackson Countians have questions or concerns.

The Library and Legal Aid of Western Missouri are here to help.

Legal Aid attorneys -- and the county's deputy director of assessment, Jeph Burroughs-Scanlon -- will be on hand for a property tax workshop Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at the Library’s Westport Branch, 118 Westport Rd. The session, from 3 to 5:30 p.m., offers information on property value adjustments in Jackson County and one-on-one guidance from the attorneys on individual tax bills.

Attendees can learn about the county’s Senior Quad Payment Program, the Missouri property tax credit, and how to file a protest.

For one-on-one appointments, please bring:

  • A utility bill, such a gas or electric bill (with your name and your property’s address).
  • Photo identification (preferably a driver’s license).
  • A copy of your 2019 tax bill.

When you arrive, you’ll be asked to sign in and then assigned a number to await a personal session with one of the attorneys. The last sessions will begin at 5:30 as the Westport Branch closes at 6.

Residents also can consult the Jackson County Collections Department (816-881-3232) and its answers to frequently asked questions.
