Author Karl Marlantes discusses his new novel Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War.
Matterhorn tells the story of Second Lieutenant Waino Mellas and his comrades in Bravo Company. Mellas, an ambitious young reservist with an Ivy League education and a chip on his shoulder, is assigned to lead a rifle platoon of 40 Marines, most of them teenagers.
When the men are ordered to leave their post and embark on a mission to sever a crucial North Vietnamese supply line, they are confronted by a huge enemy regiment. As the men fight for their lives and the lives of their friends, Mellas faces the reality of war, the truth of his motives, and the depth of his commitments.
Marlantes graduated from Yale University and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.
