Art Starts at the Library

Begin your First Friday outing at the Central Library with visits to our two galleries, live music, refreshments, and more during an open house showcasing some of the building's unique spaces.

Take in the exhibit Republican Showdown in Kansas City, recounting the drama of the nation’s last contested political convention – in KC’s Kemper Arena in 1976 – in the Rocky and Gabriella Mountain Gallery (2nd floor). The Genevieve Guldner Gallery (1st floor) houses Second Time Around, a creative collection of 35 discarded hubcaps transformed into fine art. Families can stop by the Children's Library (2nd floor) for a special story time. And guests can enjoy some French-inspired, peppy folk tunes from musical duo Mikal Shapiro and Louise Thiolon on the Rooftop Terrace (5th floor).

After the event, visitors can head to the Library streetcar stop at Ninth and Main for a quick lift to the Crossroads Arts District.
