How to Build a “Realistic” Fantasy World

Want to write your own fantasy story but struggling to figure out where to even begin? In this class, we will go over the foundational aspects of fantasy worldbuilding. From Tolkien to Rowling, every fantasy world has rules or characteristics that help drive the story forward — or make it possible in the first place.

This course will go over:

  • High vs. low fantasy
  • Hard vs. soft magic systems
  • Traditional vs. original fantasy races
  • And many other key decisions you will need to make to ensure your fantasy world feels lived-in enough to draw your readers in and keep them there.

This class is taught by a graduate student in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s MFA Program in Creative Writing.
