Kansas City’s Barkley advertising agency hatched the enormously successful “Two Guys” campaign for Sonic Drive-In a little more than 12 years ago, letting a couple of improv actors comically pitch tater tots and slushy drinks from the front seat of their car. It became a pop culture phenomenon.
How did the spots – intended to run just four months – come to be? What went into the campaign? Pat Piper, a former Barkley writer, creative director, and vice president, was at the center of it all, and walks through the process that brought “Two Guys” to life in 2003. They’re now entrenched in KC’s long and rich advertising history.
