Candice Millard: James A. Garfield

Candice Millard, author of Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine & the Murder of a President, explores the life and protracted death of James A. Garfield, who didn’t want to be president and was fatally shot just months into his first term. Millard is the best-selling author of The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey. A former writer and editor for National Geographic, she lives in Leawood, Kansas. Coming up next... The Hail to the Chiefs series continues on Wednesday, May 23, with economist and journalist Zachary Karabell discussing the career of Garfield's vice-president, the undeservedly forgotten Chester Alan Arthur. Co-presented with the Truman Library Institute and co-sponsored by KCUR’s Up to Date.
