The decades since World War II saw a wave of effective organized activism to secure freedoms and protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. There were gains in equality in employment, in military service, in marriage.

And inevitably, there was societal, cultural, and political backlash to those advances.

Amid a current upsurge in challenges to LGBTQ rights, in Missouri and across the country, the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Stuart Hinds looks back at similar times of struggle and the practices, tools, and techniques employed in overcoming them. That precedent lends guidance and hope today.

Hinds is the curator of special collections and archives, including the Gay and Lesbian Archives of Mid-America (GAMA), at UMKC. He founded GAMA in 2010 to collect, preserve, and make accessible documents and artifacts that reflect the heritage of Kansas City’s LGBT communities.

His presentation is in conjunction with the exhibition Making History: Kansas City and the Rise of Gay Rights – an Exhibit and a Response, on display in the Central Library’s Rocky and Gabriella Mountain Gallery through August 21, 2022.
