(Kansas City, Missouri) - The Kansas City Public Library concludes its ninth season of Script-in-Hand performances—featuring the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre—with the sweet, perfect-for-Mother's Day musical The Light in the Piazza.

The presentation on Sunday, May 10, 2015, begins at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Winner of six Tony Awards in 2005, including one for best original score, The Light in the Piazza revolves around wealthy Margaret Johnson and her beautiful but emotionally stalled teenage daughter, Clara. They spend a summer together in the Tuscan countryside and, when the youngster falls in love with a passionate young Italian, her mother must decide whether to reveal a secret from the girl's past, potentially derailing romance.

The episode prompts Margaret to confront her own hopes and regrets. Actress Victoria Clark, who originally portrayed the mother, earned a Tony for best performance by a leading actress in a musical.

All Script-in-Hand performances are staged by the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre with local talent and feature actors reading their lines from scripts carried in their hands, a subtle reminder of the power of the written word and an ideal way to present plays in a Library setting. The Light in the Piazza is the last in a series of four Love Stories featured during the 2015 season.

The Script-in-Hand series is underwritten by Country Club Bank. A reception, provided by Cosentino's Market, follows the performance for members of the Friends of the Kansas City Public Library. Guests who are not members may join at the door.

Admission is free. RSVP at kclibrary.org or call 816.701.3407.
